Powerhouse Dynamics' eMonitor Verifies DOE-Sponsored Zero Energy Home

Energy Management is Critical Component of ReVISION House Vegas

Boston, MA and Las Vegas, NV– (June 29, 2010) Powerhouse Dynamics, a home energy management company, verified today that the ReVISION House in Las Vegas, NV is a net-zero energy home. Powerhouse’s eMonitor has been tracking the home’s circuit and appliance-level energy usage, as well as solar PV production, since it opened in January 2010.   ReVISION House Vegas was developed by Building Media and Green Builder® Media and sponsored by the Department of Energy and Steven Winters Associates.

“The eMonitor is a great tool for homeowners to monitor and manage their households,” said William Zoeller, Project Manager for Steven Winters, which is also responsible for monitoring the results. “For the first time, a single system can show us exactly where and how much energy is being used in real-time, and how much energy is being produced by the solar PV system.”

Revision House, originally built in 1963, received an extensive energy efficiency makeover, with new windows, roof, insulation, tank-less gas water heater, LED and CFL lighting, and a 5.67 kW solar photovoltaic (PV) system; eMonitor was selected for a 1 year monitoring program of the home.

The eMonitor is unique among home energy management systems in that it monitors at the circuit level, which enables it to monitor each of the ReVISION House’s new energy efficient electric-powered systems. The eMonitor also monitors energy production of the PV system and tracks the PV impact on reducing electricity purchases from the grid and lowering the home’s carbon footprint. eMonitor can also detect irregularities with major appliances and alert homeowners when maintenance is needed.

“We are delighted to be part of the ReVISION House project and verify it’s a net-zero energy home,” said Martin Flusberg, Powerhouse Dynamics CEO.  “These ReVISION homes demonstrate the present ability to dramatically reduce a home’s energy and carbon footprints, helping move towards DOE’s goal of giving every consumer the opportunity to buy a cost-neutral, net-zero energy home by 2030."
